First Street

Six names, six mini-biographies, six local heroes. Street names mean something, they can have real potency, so when Ask Real Estate decided to name several streets and a square after people old and new associated with Manchester they wanted good knowledge and good writing.

The six people were Tony Wilson, Jack Rosenthal, Isabella Banks, Annie Horniman, James Grigor and Sir Howard Bernstein. In other words the music man and broadcaster, the playwright, the novelist, the woman who invented Rep theatre, the unsung hero of the Manchester renaissance and one of the key visionaries of this modern city.

To bring these disparate but significant people together and tie them to the site was the brief. Ask Real Estate realised these people were not known to everyone and so they needed explaining. They wanted these personalities to live and not just be a name hanging on a wall without context. The boards have achieved this along with the splendid graphics of Dave Sedgwick of Studio DBD.

The six biographies ran to almost 4,000 words. Your Place Revealed can not only bring to life your building, your house, your locale but also the street names around you. Behind every street name there’s a reason and we can find it.
